Co-creating public art in Yeovil

Over the past months, I’ve had the privilege of working as a Critical Friend to Yeovil Art Space and its Art Action Group, supporting a capacity building and collaborative approach to shaping public art in the town centre.

Rooted in conversation, co-creation, and local ambition, this process has brought together artists, community members, and stakeholders to envision a public art opportunity that truly reflects the character and aspirations of Yeovil. Rather than imposing a top-down solution, the Art Action Group has worked with Our Town – A Public Art Project for Yeovil, an initiative that places local people at the heart of shaping their shared spaces.

‘Our Town is a long-term creative programme celebrating Yeovil’s high street and town centre through the voices and creativity of its community. Since 2021, Yeovil Art Space has been working with artists, local businesses, and residents to explore the role of art and creativity in fostering civic pride and regenerating the town. This has included public art commissions, artist residencies, and engagement projects connecting communities with place.’

Being part of this journey has reaffirmed the importance of artistic agency, shared decision-making, and meaningful public engagement in public art strategies. This isn’t just about installing artwork—it’s about fostering a sense of ownership, belonging, and pride in Yeovil’s evolving urban landscape.

Excited to see how this opportunity unfolds and the creative responses it inspires!

(And its great to be working in Somerset, my home-home county!)
